Thank you for your very helpful response.

The reason we are doing 3 separate passes of the input data in this case is that the data is in 3 totally separate layouts, going to 3 separate tables, and it was not possible to get a delimited file. The file is also variable length.

What we have done is 'padded out' any 'short' rows on the file to the same length as the longest row, defined the 3 different layouts, and based on the 1st 2 characters decided which 'APPLY' to use.

Is it possible to do just one pass of the data if you have to use more than one layout, or is the way we are doing it the only way to do it in such circumstances?
