Subj:   Re: Useful Stats for Management

From:   Victor Sokovin

Chris,

I must dip into the wealth of experience from the list and ask an important question about Stats and Metrics that management may find useful about the warehouse?

As often the case with you, you start interesting but difficult threads. As I don't see any response on the list, I thought I should at least acknowledge that the topic *is* of interest and provides a nice break from syntax correction topics (also important in their own right but ...).

I assume your question is on the stats and metrics which are not directly business related and, therefore, not included in the regular business reports. Sort of pure technical DWH parameters which senior management might be interested in? If so, the question is indeed unusual.

I would suggest to provide the daily / weekly / monthly / ... DWH throughput figures. By throughput I mean, for example, the amount of data going in and out. It might depend on the DWH in question how you present the data, either in pure technical terms (records, bytes ...) or in business terms (number of transactions, order item records ...) or perhaps a combination of both. If the reports are really high level, I think you could sometimes add apples and oranges together if they are interested in the whole fruit business only, so to speak, and if that simplifies your task.

The technical metrics and time series you choose should probably somehow represent the dynamics of the business and account for the role of the DWH. For example, they could show how the DWH responded to such events as growth of the customer base, product range, revenue etc or acquisitions and merges. Perhaps they will ask you to "zoom in" on the areas of their interest, and you could start from there.

Hope this makes some sense and please keep starting difficult threads even if the response is slow.

Regards,

Victor
