Subj:   Re: Redistribute data

From:   Ramareddy, Amarnath

1. Merely by adding disk space there will not be any impact on the performance. Adding disk space will improve performance only if the earlier space was limited and the system was ending running Mini cylinder packing or pack disk etc. Only gain will be, you can store more data.

2. If you add the disks and create new AMPs then there can be some increase in performance. But for this to happen there are couple of more things that needs to be kept in mind.

a) Main memory: Since you are not changing the available main memory there will be more tasks competing for the same memory space. In this way we may end of in creating more memory crunch and reducing the performance.

b)CPU speeds: What applies to memory applies to CPU speed too.

So before going in for reconfiguration (increasing the number of AMPs). Please check and make sure that there is sufficient Main memory and CPU speeds that is unutilized.

Hope this helps....

I am not sure how exactly to find out the Memory requirements and CPU speeds. If any one can so throw some light that will be more useful.

May be we can use tools like sar, Resusage, xperstate or teradata manager to find out this. But what should be the threshhold values we should look for.

Thanks

Amar
