Thanks for all your comments on the issue.

If I get a satisfactory answer from NCR as to why I am experiencing the anomaly, I'll let you know.

One thing they did say was that queries involving Unions are performed serially, not in parallel as one might expect. This, according to NCR, was fundamental in their architecture and is not likely to change in the short or medium term.
