just for clarification - you would need an additional INOUT parameter to maintain the step number in an automated way.

And how is the most ugly solution of introducing a new stored procedure which does it the new way and leaf the old as it is as long as you have to touch the existing procs in the future. I know it is ugly and I am not really recommending this.

Keep us informed if you find an elegant way to solve your problem globaly.
