We're doing our own O/S & RDBMS installs because we want the extra control, and we have a three system migration path to maintain (OSTest ->
Development -> Production). The local NCR field engineers do all firmware/microcode upgrades as part of hardware maintenance.
We've run into varying degrees of resistance from NCR about getting support for our upgrade process, but generally support has been excellent
when we've needed it. Whether or not it's cheaper probably depends on how frequently you upgrade.
If you're a site that picks a stable release, migrates, and then stays put for 3+ years, NCR contract labor may be cheaper. If you have users
that want the latest features and you're doing a major/minor upgrade once a year plus efix patches every 6-8 weeks, then it may be cheaper to do
it yourself.
At the 2003 Partners V2R5 Experience session, I asked for a show of hands on who did their own upgrades. Of 30-40 sites represented, we were
the only ones doing our own upgrades.
