Ray: We have a fully 3NF Data Warehouse and everyone becomes very itchy talking about Dimensions. There is a 15% overhead we need to keep for each and every Database future growth. Apart from that think of 2 big core Tables say the Transaction Tables of 2 different Divisions in separate Databases. For each table you will need to keep at least 10% Free Space Percent which is a big cost. Added to that we have Summary Tables for these Transactional Tables.

And if the high honchos want to see combined data from all the business there will be big JOINS on the biggest tables and catering for more spool. While I see your viewpoint, operationally it might be difficult to maintain.

In spite of the above can we still say that "Normally an EDW will have separate databases for each subject area".
