Subj:   Re: Raid 5

From:   John Adams

We still have our test system on 5150s running RAID 5, though our production system is 5250s running RAID 1. Our NCR architect (read: pre-sales) made the impact of this decision clear to us, as he did when we suggested reconfiguring our test system as RAID 1. (More space, but less horsepower, a trade-off we were considering since it was a development/test system, until he convinced us the performance would be insufficient even for those purposes.)

I'd be surprised if NCR didn't make the impact of RAID 1 vs. RAID 5 clear, since:

a) they must've suspected this would leave them with a dissatisfied customer

b) it's in NCR's interest to sell larger systems

My suspicion would be someone at XYZ Corp wanted Teradata but couldn't justify the cost of a properly sized system, and disregarded NCR's advice (see point b), but that's just a guess.
