Subj:   Re: Examples for a beginner

From:   Paul Johnson

Well, I've never written a cursor in 12 years. Maybe that's a result of not coming from an environment where cursors existed, prior to moving on to Teradata. I'm confident that all/most problems can be solved with good old non-procedural SQL, once you get your head around the set-based approach.

When stored procedures came along recently I concluded that it was partly to fend off criticism that they didn't exist in Teradata. I can't see an overwhelming case for their widespread use. Maybe I'm just a Luddite!

My advice to newcomers to Teradata is not to complicate matters when writing applications, and that "it's not difficult, it's just different".

Paul Johnson.
