It is possible to use a character column for partitioning. As you suggest, any unique column is not a good choice for partitioning (character or any other data type). Character data type partitioning will be defined with cases or ranges since it is not possible to specify an incrementing expression such as INTERVAL 1 DAY for a DATE data type.
