The things I've seen which will slow mload are as follows. 1: The table is a set table vs multiset. 2: The table has a UPI. 3: The data is unevenly distributed across amps. According to your description it doesn't sound like any of the above. BUT still worth looking at. Is the table empty in both tests you are running? If you are loading into an empty table for the fast test, then loading into a table with records in the second, this could impact performance especially in the above scenarios. Hope this helps.
