From:   Dempsey, Mike

You are correct about Find/Replace in version 7.1.

It is considerably slower when replacing large numbers of strings. (5 to 10 times)

I have a fix for this which can be provided in an efix if necessary. (no one has officially opened a problem report for this so far.)

For a regular Insert statement the time spent in the application itself is very small. Although Unicode might add a small amount of time to the network transmittion, the bulk of the time will be spent actually performing the insert on the DBS.

The time difference within the app itself should be very small. (It always used unicode internally, but 7.1 has to handle 2 query windows.)

There will also be some time spent in the ODBC driver parsing the query and converting from unicode to ascii - assuming you are using an ascii session. To verify that the increased time is not due to the ODBC driver you could test SQLA 7.1 with ODBC 3.3, or SQLA 6.2 with ODBC 3.5. (I think I am remembering your 'old' version correctly ... but not sure.)

I would need more details to really look into this problem.

My recommendation would be to upgrade to SQLA 7.2 (latest patch is 7.2.0.2) as soon as you can. It will definitely improve the Replace All performance and may help with the Inserts. (If the problem is really coming from within the app.)
