In coexistent systems why do the disk(s) have to be from the same family?

Why can't you use EMC under one system and the other brand under the rest of the system ?

We've had many coexistent systems over the years, and the most important thing is to balance the performance across all the nodes, since everything runs at the speed of the slowest one. We depend on NCR to come up with the best mix of cpus, dasd, and amps per node in order to equalize the throughput on each type of node.

From what I've heard about EMC disks, supposedly they're reputed to be more reliable but they don't perform as well in the Teradata environment as other brands of disk.

Personally, I would have serious reservations of mixing EMC disk with other types of disk within the same machine because you would have some nodes with faster disks and other nodes with slower disks, and that would be very hard to balance.
