From:   Dempsey, Mike

I'm afraid we follow the Microsoft guidelines that state that you should NOT pop up dialogs ('in your face') unless it is a serious error such as the application is about to crash. Instead the errors should be displayed on the status bar.

The F11 option is available for errors that are too long to fit on the status bar, or because the status bar cleared when you clicked into a window ... but as you say, the user must realize there is an error in order to use that.

The 'Hover' over the result cell is for BOTH successful and error result messages.

This is basically a 'training' issue. The users must be trained to check whether or not their queries were successful, and what the cause of the problem was when they fail.

BTW
You can create a set of canned queries, in a custom syntax file, and distribute that, if you know in advance what type of queries they will be running. They could then select the one that most closely matches what they want to do [using the Query Builder - just select the query from the list] and hopefully that would cut down on the number of errors.
