I think the previous responses basically answered the question. If the DBS supports variable delcaration (SQL Server / Sybase) then you can do this - otherwise (Teradata / DB2) you can not.

Note that if you are using Queryman/SQL Assistant with SQL Server you may want to use the 'Execute Parallel' button to submit your entire T-SQL script in one chunk. (The Execute button would send it one statement at a time - if you use semi-colons.)
