Ray,
I would have to say that I would disagree with your opening statement, "Normally an EDW will have separate databases for each subject area".
That is not typical for an NCR / Teradata installation of an Enterprise Data Warehouse. What I have seen the majority of the time, is a single
database for the normalized subject matter, and occasionally, separate databases for application "dependant" data marts (normally views, but some
tables and macros) to support specific business areas.
Having served as a consultant for NCR Professional Services on many client projects, and the author (or co-author) of many of the NCR CRM
Industry Logical Data Models (Telco, Energy, Transportation, Healthcare, and P&C Insurance). I can say this with some degree confidence.
The one extreme variation to this was while at BellSouth. The four main business units created near identical database implementations of the
same "Logical Data Model" in order to maintain a 'legal' separation of customers (rather than using secure views to filter the data that could
impact either performance or present other potential legal risk).
