Subj:   Re: How to create sys generated keys

From:   Little, Doug

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions of using v2r5 identity. Yes this will be very handy when my site updates the dbms at someday. Until then I'm looking for v2r4 solutions.

Situation

We just got switched from doing our project whse in oracle to teradata.

Our design calls for, in addition to a true whse, a star schema data mart and using system generated keys. In oracle and many other db's sequence numbers or identity is the typical way of handling these. I understand in Teradata, Inmod's would be 1 way of handling, but on our platform (Sun) inmods would need to be coded in C. Not really a problem, but not currently in our staff skill set.

Short of v2r5, I'm looking for a method that would work today using standard sql or utility functions.

In multiload I understand you can use .SET to hold local values.

1. Is it possible to set a .SET variable to the output of a select stmt

ie .SET X=Select current_seqno from seqno_table

2. Is it possible to increment a set variable ie .SET X=X+1

Thoughts?

Thanks
