Subj:   Re: Loading Fact data directly onto Teradata

From:   Frank C. Martinez IV

Hola,

Well, I don't know much about transformations in Informatica, since we're-doing the loading with Informatica, and then doing the transforms on Teradata. But I (and Roland Wenzlofsky) have both been on a project where the whole purpose was transformation. This wasn't a DW project, it was where the client was transforming data from an MVS billing system to a new Oracle billing system, and the fastest way to do it was to tranform the data on Teradata! We had three days to cut over, and we designed the Teradata DDL/SQL to do one thing, transform fast. Which was very, very sucessful. One of the last things I did on that particular project was convert a suite of 100 Oracle validation checks to Teradata. I took 4 hours for one billing cycle on Oracle. 45 minutes for 15 billing cycles on Teradata. And the particular Teradata box we were using had been cobbled together from used parts and had the loving name of Titanic, so it wasn't a very "tuned" machine. So all I know is what I've worked with.
