Subj:   Re: Question on compression

From:   Matthew Winter

Hi,

Recently we compressed a table by 50%, which has greatly improved the overall scan speeds. Having gone through this exercise, we have found that most tables can be greatly reduced in size, and we are looking forward to V2R5, when we can compress 255 values in a single column. Certainly the new compression wizard tool that was mentioned would be a great help in compressing tables in the future.

One thing that disappointed me about the compression was the way the system automatically decompresses any compressed fields when they are brought into the Spool area. This to me seems to be unecessary and very costly. Shawly in most queries the field would only need to be decompressed when it is ready for sending back the data to the requestor.

Regards

Matthew Winter
