As I understand it, at the cost of 1 byte per record, you will be able to compress up to 256 values for a given column.
Today, it costs 1 bit to compress 1 value. Most of our tables have compressed columns, and the performance increases (and decreases in
disk space utilization) have been great. We haven't had to throw hardware at our compressed tables to get increased performance. The
performance increase was immediate with our existing hardware.
