In addition to professional organizations, you might also ask the candidate about the Lists (Discussion Groups, chatrooms, et al) to
which they subscribe (OK, I'm a bit biased here). There are Lists for Unix, MVS, various databases, Teradata, CRM, application development,
just about all of the computer languages, etc.
I think that the value of Lists has generally been under-appreciated, but that they will become a significant resource where a potential
employer can get a good feel for the knowledge, enthusiasm and communication skills of a candidate.
