I was experimenting with some of the RI features when I posted the original question. We use our ETL process to validate RI.

I was experimenting on empty tables and small test systems using a code generator that created the DDL. Hence the alter table statements instead of inclusion in the original create. A production implementation would be either via a populated table or inserting into the revised table.

What has your experience been using DBMS driven RI? What type of overhead is incurred during loading? What else would one need to be aware of? What are the benefits?
