What are actually advantages of volatile and temporary tables? Better performance? When should I use them?

Our transformation scripts have been designed by NCR experts. There are intermediate auxiliary tables in them, but they are always permanent in terms of Teradata. Since then we are not using volatile and temporary tables at all.
