We do create tables with NUPI/USI fairly often. Our data admins design tables with their use in mind and set PI's to support joining. A
synonym chain of a 1000 is long, and I would be concerned if there is much updating of the index fields of either the USI or NUPI. The
overhead of maintaining the USI is, to us, a lot cheaper than the reruns if the data gets corrupted by bugs in the transform jobs. In our
largest tables, I estimate that more than 50% of the space used is devoted to indexes. That data is very sparse and most non-key columns
are compressed/nulls.
Will you need to leave the table in this state for a long time or is this a one time exercise?
Electronically,
Al Czajkowski
