2) would putting a USI (that would hardly ever be used) just to enforce uniqueness be worth the DASD

I have tried using USI to protect the PK for a table and I have found that the size of the table doubles !!! (due to subtables). For (big) fact tables, I try to use other mechanisms to protect PK.
