I have been working with Teradata since 1990, and that's when they were still Teradata. So we have gone from a DBC 1012 to our current
NCR 5250. Not an extrememly large shop, yet, 8 nodes all together, but hoping to add 4 more this year. That's because we have been doing a
lot of benchmarking lately. The first application was a Medicare warehouse on DB2 on a four way sysplex mainframe environment. The results
were amazing. Queries that when allowed to finish would run for days on DB2. There was a set of 6 particular queries that we could never
get to complete on DB2, that when run on Teradata completed in less than 20 minutes and that's with using only the primary indexes, no
secondary at all. I hope to convert that system sometime 2nd quarter this year.
Our most recent adventure is benchmarking an Oracle warehouse on Teradata. With the assistance of NCR and the use of a tool they had
called ORA2TD, I was able to move 300 GB over to Teradata via UNIX named pipes. It went rather smoothly. They have begun the benchmarking
and from what I here the results are as we expected, GREAT!
What I'm trying to say here is that with all the adventures that I have had with Teradata over these past 10 plus years and all the
different Teradata/NCR/AT&T/NCR/Teradata folks that have come in to support us, I have never enjoyed working with any vendor like I do
with Teradata. Our current rep that we have is the best to date! And not just because he takes me golfing. He makes sure I get the
answers I need to get the job done whatever it may be. In my book, they are the best!
Thanks, Tony
