Poor data distrubtion happens. Physical database design is a balancing act. Data distribution is one of many factors to be considered.

Regarding the use of the Join Index: currently, Teradata will not use a Join Index to solve this problem (it perfers the AMP local NUPI merge join instead of a hash join via the use of Table A's join index and duplicating Table B to all AMPs.) Join Indexes are a relatively new feature and many adjustments still need to be made to the Optimizer regarding the use of Join Indexes. 'Teradata will do the rest'... true, but only based upon user feedback.
