Insert select into empty table is undoubtedly the best - for the reasons already detailed but it does not follow that you need as much
space as the table takes at present: The indexes on the current table are likely to take significant space.
That subject was covered by emails in this forum, quite recently. but to summarise: Insert into a table without indexes and possibly
create space by dropping the indexes on the original table first. Then recreate the indexes after you've dropped the redundant table. The
subject of indexes
