It might not be as bad as you think. Since we recommend that spool be set to 25 - 30 % of the system, you also have that space to leverage for your insert select. Between spool and perm you should have enough space to have two copies of your largest table. That is one copy in spool and one copy in perm space as duplication of your largest table. There are other alternatives to this approach which can reduce the overall space needed to 1 copy plus some overhead of your largest table. For example, extracting out your largest table to an external source file and then reloading, but this approach isn't what I would call attractive.
