Subj:   Re: OLTP transactions

From:   Paul Johnson

The over-riding principle here is 'horses for courses', surely? Teradata is the ony DBMS designed from day 1 for DSS workloads. It's little surprise that other DBMS offerings are better at OLTP (all of them?), but they're typically abysmal at large-scale DSS.

Also, there is a conflict between resource demands when running OLTP and DSS apps on the same platform. Even if the OLTP app can be tuned to run acceptably, it still won't sit well in an ad hoc DSS environment.

Capture one one platform, analyse on another is the time-honoured solution.

Paul Johnson.
