Is it by any chance a Dell laptop? A colleague of mine just had a similar experience with his new Dell laptop. It would often hang up when the
CPU activity was rather high. High for a short period of time but not nothing exceptional. He was clueless and went into the trouble of opening
the laptop and inspecting what was going on around the CPU. It turned out that Dell were using a rather unusual ventilation system which worked as
a kind of vacuum cleaner sucking dust *into* the laptop. The CPU area was actually encircled by dust congestions, and a little bit of high CPU
activity was enough to bring the temperature to horrifying levels. The fan would not help. I don't remember how he solved the problem. If your
laptop is Dell and you don't feel like opening it, get it fixed by Dell because it will have a very short life otherwise and it will give you all
kinds of troubles.
