Hi,

In your case I think either a PPI on start_date or separate, single column NUSI's would give you benefits. If you use a NUSI on either of these columns then make them value-ordered NUSI's. I think PPI will be slightly better in that it is usually less overhead than a NUSI (disk space, processing cost).

If you built a composite NUSI then for your second example the NUSI is not going to be used - unless (possibly) you 'order by values' on start_date.
