I think I was hoping for:

(small_table inner join big_table) into spool 1 (spool 1 inner join very_big_table) into spool 2 (small_table LEFT JOIN spool 2)

all steps merge joins, all steps manipulating small number of rows rather than billions.

Am I expecting too much from the optimiser ?
