     sel characters( OREPLACE( 'my sql containing $$VALUEPAIRSTRING and other
     sql;','$$VALUEPAIRSTRING', rpad('',10000,'abc') ))

This gives me 545 - i.e. same problem - so it must be something to do with the set up here (or V14, if you'd used a different version of Terdata)

Thanks for checking, Marek (and I like the generation of the string, by the way - didn't know you could do that in Teradata)
