Many Thanks to both Daves for your kind insights. This clears up a lot of questions I had. We are running on TD13 and we haven't tried Algorithmic or BLC yet. So I always intended MVC when I thought of compression. Sorry for not mentioning that . I have checked that we have had better elapsed times during the select with compressed tables but I was still worried about CPU time increase- the manual also mentions in passing that "with more data per data block due to the smaller row sizes, it is possible for some queries to become more CPU-intensive when using compression extensively".

So I wanted to know whether I'm looking at the right set of variables for the decision.
