Subj:   Admin Comment: Removal of Copyrighted Material

From:   John Hall

This weekend I received a Notice of Infringement from Teradata ordering the removal of some copyrighted material from the TeradataForum website.

With only a couple of exceptions, that content dated to 2003 and 2008. At that time, I believed that we had the permission of NCR to place those documents on the TeradataForum website. Either I got it wrong or things have changed. Whatever the case, we have removed the infringing content.

In addition, we were requested remove a couple of posts.

Although copyright issues have rarely risen, I would like to remind everybody that we need to be careful.

While placing entire copyrighted documents is certainly a violation and will be blocked, I would like to remind you that extracting a small portion of a document (a few sentences or a paragraph) is covered by the 'Fair Use' provisions of the Copyright Law and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Such use is permitted if you're doing so with the purpose of making criticism, commenting, making a point, etc. If you make such an extract, please be sure to credit the source in your post.

Please do not post questions from the Teradata Certified Professional Program. Apparently people who have taken the test (or have access to it) are required to sign some kind of non-disclosure agreement and we don't want to be involved with a breach of that agreement.

I want to say that I can't always recognize when a post will lead to a copyright issue and I would like to ask that if such a situation exists, please let me know so that I can appropriate action. Chest beating and excessive verbiage isn't necessary.

As I complied with the Notice of Infringement, I held posts over the weekend. There are a couple waiting to go out and they will be released shortly.

As always, thank you for your patience
