Subj:   Re: BLC at table creation

From:   Alves, Patrick

Hi,

If you are working on the latest platform (2690 or 6690) then BLC is already and automaticaly activated (because compression is done by hardware cards).

on older platform then you can activate BLC as it's writed down.

For me It should be better to use queryband syntaxe instead of Ferret:

- queryband can be done via SQLA or BTEQ, ferret is not generally accessible to developers

- but the bigest pontis that you can split your compression work ( dealing with few partition at one time) because you can not expect to compress a huge table in few minutes, it could take hours or days. During this time the object is locked....

Another point : Don't forget that compression have a impact on ressources on the older platforms, espacially on cpu ( CPU overhead about 20 - 30% on query over compressed or not compressed table), so be carrefull if your teradata system is CPU bounded.

Regards.

Patrick.
