Ah, and we haven't even discussed the cultural milieu that you find yourself in. Does your company already have a standard way of doing things
(which ends with tools, but might start with data transmitted via a specific medium, which has a certain bandwidth). Are they expecting a magic
solution or are they willing to pay the cost that an new/upgrade might cost? Are there any barriers to success that need to be documented before
the requirements are gathered? Is the timeline reasonable enough to allow for discovering what the data is about, or is it already fixed? I used
to do what was called a "cultural assessment" when I worked for the Orange People many years ago (wasn't called Teradata during that interim,
rather AT&T GIS), and that assessment turned out to be very useful at predicting the success of the placement of a Teradata database. Don't know
if they still do things like that, but I know I still try to grasp the cultural undercurrent of any project to which I am assigned. Talk about
pie in the sky! But especially important for any Teradata implementation.
