Subj:   Re: Difference between collect stats on a column vs. a table

From:   Tewksbury, Kevin

Sukul,

As far as collecting the stats at the table level vs. columns there is really no difference as it will go to the stats tables to figure out what to collect on and then collects on them individually, the same as if you had written the statements yourself.

Now, with that said, there are things to keep in mind:

1) The stats will have to have been collected on the individual columns/indexes prior to doing the collect stats at the table level. -- If not, you get a 3624 error message when collecting at the table level

2) If you drop and recreate the table for any reason, you must collect the stats on the columns/indexes -- be sure to do a help stats on the table before dropping so you know what to collect on

We do not collect at the table level as a standard practice for batch jobs, but as DBA's we might do on occasion/as needed just to simplify our typing.

Hope this helps!

KRT
