You can use multi-value compression on VARCHAR data types in 13.10

Here's and excerpt from the TD 13.10 SQL Data Types and Literals manual:

You can use MVC to compress columns with the following data types:

* Any numeric data type
* BYTE
* CHARACTER
* DATE

To compress a DATE value, you must specify the value as a Date literal using the ANSI DATE format (DATE 'YYYY-MM-DD').

For example: COMPRESS (DATE '2000-06-15').

* GRAPHIC
* VARBYTE
* VARCHAR
* VARGRAPHIC

The TD 13.10 Database Design manual now says that null is not compressed as a default when you add compress to a column, you have to specify it.

Looks like I need to do some reading and re-evaluate how I think about compression,
