Agreed the documentation is not great in this section. I also was confused about "nulls by default", and ran some tests to confirm it was still occurring. There is also still a section on evaluating CHAR with compression versus VarChar without. Given that VARCHAR is now compressible are there any further drawbacks to VARCHAR. Working on forklifts from Oracle I've seen VARCHAR(2) or even VARCHAR(1). In the past this wouldn't make sense but with compression does it matter anymore?
