| We are having an issue with Trailing spaces in business objects reports where the extra spaces have to be added to query
parameters. | |
| Anyone know of a fix for this outside of trimming all the columns on the database side? | |
Some issues in BI never seem to age, and this is one of them. I'm pretty sure we can track it back for many years. Perhaps people working for
veterans like Cognos could post some hot discussions of this kind from the 60's or so?
The issue is stemming from the fundamental difference between fixed- and variable-length data types. Both have their advantages and
disadvantages.
Fixed-length fields are usually more manageable and faster thanks to their uniform structure but they tend to waste space, and this is why the
pay-as-you-go variable-length data types are used. But they come with their price as well.
Giving any short answer to the 50(+)-year-old discussion is a waste of time. I am just posting this to attract attention to the history and
the background. Read up and study the history, and find your own way out. Good luck.

Victor
