I ran the SELECTs in SQLA and the format didn't work. But when I ran them in bteq formatting worked. I could get formatting in SQLA using varchar as you suggested.

I found why SEL CURRENT_DATE (FORMAT 'YYYY/MM/DD); didn't work. There is no second single quote.
