I am with John and Frank.

If you have statistics collected on the "playing" columns, a product join decision by the optimizer - especially in your case - is very often the most efficient way. I faked statistics to be more clever and efficient than the optimizer, but since V2R6.0 it did not work anymore ( which I really appreciate .. )
