I would recommend you to start with exploring statisitcs on the column. As I see there is no confidence step in step(3) of explain.

Below sequence will give High confidence recommendations.

     Diagnostic helpstats on for session;
     Explian 

It also shows other low confidence steps. But start with High confidence ones. Collect those statisics.

Once you are done with it. See if any join column miss any statistics and does any of the multi-column steps are necessary.
