Subj:   Select statement as a column

I got the following request from a user and am not sure if this can be done. Checking if there is a way.

------------------------------------------------

When working with Oracle, you are allowed to put a select statement in for a column.

     sel
     a.infokey,
     a.infodata,
     (sel count(*) from dbc.tables where tablekind='T') num_tables
     from
     dbc.dbcinfo a
     ;

When I try stuff like that in Teradata, the SQL crashes. Is there a technique I can use to simulate a select statement as a column in Teradata? I know I can do a cross join in the from clause, but is there a way to put it into the select clause.
