I believe setAutoCommit() is supported only in TMODE=ANSI (though I don't see that in the documentation, and it doesn't throw an error in TMODE=TERA). This is true of ODBC also, BTW.

With TMODE=TERA, you should execute explicit "BT;" statement to start a multi-statement transaction and "ET;" statement to end it.
