The other reason why I put the extra brackets in as a matter of course is that if there is casting or formatting (eg converting a dec to char with format) involved as well as naming then I usuallyy find it is necessary to ensure that all of the actions are completed and instantiated before going forward. In some circumstances (particularly when exporting from Bteq etc field mode vs record mode etc) one can run in confusing results (different output from what was used in the SQL) but . . .

So, I just always go belt and braces.
