In our production / batch area we currently try to keep to simple production views with every table having an equivalent SELECT * view over it. Any code that is executed is through mainframe jobs using one or more work tables to build up the data to the final required position which is accessed via a simple view over it. This is a situation that the support area is comfortable with regards to supporting the processing. We are now getting requests to use complex views, which are effectively moving code out of the mainframe jobs into the view and generally no longer using temporary tables to build up the data. I am trying to look at the pros and cons of each method to help decide when it is appropriate to use a complex view in production / batch and when it is appropriate to use work tables and mainframe jobs. Obviously, performance, maintenance and the ease of support are major factors in any decision and it may be that a mixture of both methods is appropriate. Does anyone have any opinions / experience they could share? Regards, Graham Graham Parry
