Hi Glenn:

I would have a very difficult time to disagree with much of what you wrote. There are many postings that have little or no info to help detect what is the actual problem, or even if there is one. At the same time, I don't have the same expectations for this forum as I do for the Master's list.

So, what do we as more experienced people do? We could ignore them. We could ask for more detail, or Heaven forbide, we could belittle their scant to little information.

On this one, I chose to give a vague answer to a vague question. At this point, if it satisfies the intent of the posting - great. If it doesn't, maybe it will prompt additional thought and/or detail to the question from the source.

I do understand your frustration with some of the postings. At the same time, please consider there are going to be many people out there struggling with the new environment of Teradata. Others from around the world will be struggling to formulate a question using a foreign language. Others might just be lazy. Is it my place to judge them for not knowing something? Fortunately or unfortunately, I am a teacher and therefore somewhat compelled to try and help someone struggling, regardless of the reason.

If I were to change anything about my vague reply, I probably could have asked him what the EXPLAIN indicated.

Thanks for sharing.

Mike
